@Taurisk, I am also a migrant of some 24 years, but from England.
I too, was totally shocked by the racist attitudes of almost every single white Australian who I encountered then and since. Having grown up in London with many Afro Caribbeans as my close friends, I was frankly speechless and horrified.
The first conversation with our neighbour was based around "bloody boongs".
Then another said we call them boongs as that is the noise that is made when you hit them with your bull bar!
The same man also said that the huge trees in the next town all had abbos planted under them, there are no aboriginal people living there.
We very much enjoyed the film Australia, it was based on reality. A reality that many white Australians prefer to deny, which is why the reviews were not good.

I also had no idea of the awful history of Australia, else I would not have migrated here. When we visited NZ it was refreshing to see that the Maori people were treated with far more respect.
I had a good friend who had a business in Port Hedland. I visited many times and found that the gainfully employed Aboriginal people held their heads high and looked very confident and happy.
How many Aboriginal people do you see employed in the suburbs, I have never seen even one and please don't come back with the age old excuse that they do not wish to work. Many do. I know that for a fact as I befriended a lovely young Aboriginal women for many years.
There is now at least some hope, as lately children are taught the full truth of Aboriginal history, which was always conveniently omitted before.
Last but not least, Australia Day makes me absolutely cringe. There is a good case for the whole thing to be scrapped altogether as it causes pain to our Aboriginal people.
It is no cause to celebrate.
