True not many university professors are billionaires but some of us get more of a buzz out of learning and teaching than making money
I was a reluctant academic through my university years....in hind sight I should have taken up a trade. I basically fell into geology mainly because an ex girfriend's brother chose to study geology and I was too lazy to make my own well considered choice. I was lucky and managed to land a summer job with NZ Geological Survey at the end of my final year at uni and got to work with some really good field geologists on a couple of mapping projects. A couple of years later I spent a year working at NZGS's Wellington HQ and got to meet some of the big names in NZ geology at the time....that was an experience you can't put a price on. The pay was abysmal but that didn't matter because I was getting free tuition from some of the best guys in the game and I was learning something new every day.
My early years in the oil and gas game were exciting times and I was on a steep learning curve but towards the end of my career the job had changed a lot and I was finding the job physically and mentally tiring as well as the travel to and from work. I could have stayed working for a few more years and made a bit more loot but when I retired I had enough saved to find a comfortable retirement and I had a desire to do other things such as spend more time on my guitar making and volunteering with a local heritage railway..too passions that had been sitting on the back burner during my busy working years.
Does knowledge = success? I think if you're happy where you are in life and you don't have any major regrets about the choices you've made in life then you're successful
