More that the 'solution' being sold isn't actually a solution to anything.
With only solar and windmills being supported by the New Green Deal people there is no potential to displace 'fossil fuel' for even power generation. Since they are intermittent there is the need for 100% peaking capacity in a Green Grid. At scale that comes from gas. Batteries could only ever be a tiny fraction.
Hydro and nuclear are not supported. The former at scale and the latter not at all.
If we look at how much fossil fuel is burnt to create each Tesla EV battery we'll rapidly learn that it will never pay back the investment, even if plugged into solar and windmills 100% of the time.
With the number of coal plants under construction in the world, Australia closing or building a plant or two won't even be a fraction of a rounding error. Even if CO2 was the toxin the Green Agenda people portray it as, rather than being essential to all life on this planet. The 'greenhouse' effect of CO2 in the atmosphere is non-linear, and is virtually maxed out at current and higher levels.
NHC will be needed for some time to come. As will the other Australian and foreign owned thermal coal companies.
The issue is of market artificiality. The companies will represent stranded assets at some point in the future. But as with railguns, that point will always be 10 years in the future, for the next half century at least.
Fusion at scale may change the equation.
