look intuitively you are right more buyers means more demand and so higher prices. However markets are rarly so simplistic. Traders normally look as 1st derivatives and further down stream effects. For example China has huge port infrastructure linked by rail to take Australian coal. So can handle large volumes efficiently. By banning Oz coal had to rely on Mongolian coal. Subject to winer snow delays and other problems. Coal had to be handled by road driving up to the cost of transport etc. So switching from a well oiled infrastructure to a chaotic one. Means they May have to buy more coal at bad times as can't rely on supply chains and coal to be there when you need it. This maybe overthinking things but always worth trying to take the other side of the argument. Therefore my outlook is China buying Oz coal May spike prices initially but in the long run will be deflationary to coal prices.
