Looking at the recent acquisitions done by FujiFilm Corporation as well as their Corporate Presentations since 2015, you may see a change, away from "hands-on" development to outsourcing/CDMO. The writing has been on the wall, but the amendments to the sub-sub-licensing gave me the impression that this will allow for the license to be passed down the "umbrella", which wasn't the case.
The quote of Ross's comment is in my opinion not the most unfortunate one. Rather:

Given the context of FF walking away - albeit with an oversized bandaid of US$5 million - where does that leave FF's "validation of our Cymerus platform technology"?
That's where progress needs to be made - partnerships (and I am not talking about universities) - to validate.
