However, very little motivation to use solar.

This Sun Cable idea is just that, an idea. For the amount of money that they have already spent on this project, they could have provided the NT remote communites and all of Katherine with a complete solar powered solution. In fact, theree is still the opportunity to do that with EXISTING panel technology and existing battery technology.
