coffeesknob, arg has been a great performer for me over many years ... i did an exercise a cuppla years ago that showed I had a compound return of about 15% (from memory!!) ... just check their MER (management expense ratio) against any of the other LICS or unlisted funds and they absolutely SMASH them!!
Went to agm a few years ago & it is "daggy as hell"; eg. the people managing your funds are NOT wasting your money on all the trimmings.
Check the salary of the ceo; totally reasonable. (Unlike a lot of the newer LIC's which are "poor copies" of ARG & basically exist to channel as much of an investors pocket through to management and usually an external manager.
In conclusion imo it is about as conservative (boring??) as they come .... just one word of caution; if you are totally new they DO actually "range trade" more than one would anticipate & imo they are at traditionally "low" point in that range trading eg. should be a reasonable time to enter.
