Firstly, "online" assessments don't necessarily mean remote. Under most circumstances, online assessments are done under standard exam conditions at a physical location. It's just doing an exam with a computer instead of pen and paper.
I also don't see how any alternatives are in a better place to combat this. Off the top of my head, I think online assessments are actually the best placed in this regard.
e.g.
* Change up questions to make it more difficult for a chatbot to answer
* Record every keystroke, mouse movement and pause to assess likelihood of suspect behavior.
* Work with popular AI providers on anti-cheat services. That is, an API you send the answer to, and it will return the likelihood of cheating.
