Modern western tanks must mean that they have written off too many of their own and are running low. I'd suggest majority of destroyed tanks is via ATGM or artillery so being western isn't really much of a defence.

Well my understanding is modern main battle tanks are much superior to soviet era tanks in withstanding enermy fire. They are also technically better at aiming and firing. The munitions they use out range and better penetrate the armour of soviet tanks. So an advance or even a defense by a main battle tank is quite different to the same by a soviet era tank. Things evolve, modern western tanks have 50 years over the typical Russian tank used in Ukraine.
