"Victoria Police can confirm that a male prisoner has died following an assault which occurred earlier this afternoon, the spokeswoman said.
Police have not released the mans age or what he was imprisoned for.
Underworld figure Mick Gatto said he had heard unconfirmed rumours about Williams having died but said that was all he had heard.
