Remember:
- this is the new shorts opened on the day
- it often proves to be misreported or is related to timing
- the way this data is supplied to investors is not always clear in terms of how/where etc
Certain that it is related to the cross trade - but I'm not sure how. Account movements maybe?
My guess is one of the big shorters just negotiated to offload 5m of their shorts to another entity - who then would have to report those as new shorts.
Time will give us a clearer understanding.
