    Basically source rocks get buried and subjected to elevated temperature that drives catagenesis..the cracking process that turns organic material into hydrocarbons. Whether you get oil or gas depends on the temperature the source rocks get up to. From 60 to 160degC catagenesis occurs with oil produced up to 225 degC and gas from 160 to 160degC. Beyond 225degC you're into the area where metagenesis begins.....
