To give those kids something in the form of a higher education would engender self-respect, the respect of their peers, the chance of meaningful employment and something to lose, as it were. Yes, Scoto, a high wall with security on the gate, and free tuition subject to keeping their noses clean with the authorities, but at the discretion of the University Chancellor, given the bad element of the police might unfairly target some students based on colour. And the building should have some class to it; something that would stand as a monument for 1,0000 years; something the students could be proud of. As opposed to a jumble of tin shacks, which would attract no one. Make of it a beautiful carrot and convince them that an education would change their lives forever. Caveat: I think free university should be available to everyone.

thats a longer term goal than I was thinking. and my ideas are coming up in Alice Town meeting and in other forums. a first Aussie University is a good thought .... an edifice of knowledge for all first Aussies to engage in - around the similar size as Uluru. a true church of reason. and teaching cultural skills and traditions as well as sciences, engineering and economics..... nice idea.
