Are you sure? It was my impression the failures during the logging of the main bore were at surface during pre-run tool checks. Even if the tool had failed in the hole it's likely to have been during an op check at the casing shoe...not in open hole.

On the sidetrack the RCX tool was wrecked during the fishing operation. There was no working backup tool but even if there hasd been, I am fairly sure by the time they had gotten the thing down to the Angwa on drill pipe (on wireline would have been a suicide mission) the hole would have started deteriorating mechanically and chances of getting pressures and samples would have been diddly squat. The fact they had to push a packer down with the drill string during the P and A operations confirms the hole was going to shit mechanically.
