Bauxite from Minim Martap: Camalco joins forces with FNE to recruit nearly 2,000 project employees

(Business in Cameroon) - On February 9, 2023, the National Employment Fund (FNE) and the company Camalco, a local subsidiary of the Australian Canyon Resources, which is developing the project to mine the Minim Martap bauxite deposit, in the Adamaoua region, signed a partnership agreement in Yaoundé. "  Our intention is to be close to the FNE, so that precisely when we want to start the work and hire, we can rely on them to have qualified employees  ", explains André Henry, CEO of Camalco.

Concretely, within the framework of this collaboration, it will be question for the FNE, when the time comes, to make available to Camalco its database of job seekers, in order to allow the recruitment on the Minim Martap project of a skilled labor. In the event of changes in Camalco's human resources needs, the mining operator is also required to refer to the FNE.

At the start of the project, we learn from good sources, 700 to 800 employees will have to be recruited. The workforce could reach 2,000 people during the cruising phase of the bauxite exploitation of Minim Martap, whose entry into production from the deposit was nevertheless envisaged in 2022 by Camalco and its parent company Canyon Resources. As of now, no start date for the project has been officially announced.

According to the latest analyzes carried out on this bauxite deposit, on 16 of the 79 bauxite plateaus identified, the potential reaches 892 million tonnes, including 250 million tonnes at "  very high grade  ", ideal for the production of aluminium. According to James Durrant, the project manager at Canyon Resources, the analysis of the remaining 63 plateaus should bring the potential of the deposit to around 2 billion tonnes of bauxite. Which would make it "probably the largest deposit in the world, in quantity and quality  ", he specifies.
