do you remember when the USSR took over all Europe up to west germany and caged them inside the iron curtain ?
US , France etc never attacked USSR

NATO isn't like the iron curtain - countries rule themselves and have their own opinions - consider Hungary and Turkey as an example of that independance ...BUT Hungary and Turkey still want the protection
NATO is no threat to russia ...only to russian expansion...thats why putin hates it
and Ukraine never joined .... thats why they were attacked - putin far too gutless to attack NATO so he attacked a non NATO country and thought he could get away with the land stealing exercise

NATO should've allowed Ukraine to join , to have that protection ....they were trying not to provoke russia ....no war if they had let Ukraine join
