The problem is that the positive result for the subgroup of the population is quite likely to have been a chance result. You can see this from failed phase trials where a company claimed "success" in a subgroup and then went ahead with a phase 3 trial targeting the subgroup which also failed to achieve the primary end point. They then claim the treatment works because another subgroup showed efficacy...
