But you have to buy on or before March 1. Any you buy on March 2 DO NOT get the dividend. You can sell March 2 and get the dividend but not buy.
The record date represents the +2 day settlement time. You have to buy 2 days before the record date in order for the share belonging to you on the register.
The person who goes to sleep March 1knowing they have previously bought the shares gets the divvy. If you transfer the shares to someone on March 2 the dividend goes to the original holder on March 1.
