    I disagree. In a civilized society it [gold and silver] was the principal form of currency. Sure you can barter outside a currency - that happen all the time, but when once wants to trade, gold and silver always works.

    Take the opium wars for example. China demanded silver and that's what they got until England, who was running out of silver, decided that the terms of trade was opium [simplified I know - but is the basis of the war].

    I do not believe that modern times suddenly mean that we can no longer rely on historical means for trade. I not suggesting that gold and silver will return as the principle method for monetary transfer but it may very well underpin such transactions. Gold and silver could very well determine confidence in a particular currency and nothing else.

    Is this why the Yanks are not permitting Fort Knox to be audited. They continue to role out their credentials re: holdings yet we know nothing of its where abouts for the last 30-40 years.
