I'll start by saying that assessing the environmental impacts of mines is way out of my comfort zone, but just doing a bit of reading into the whole lead-dust issue that has Lue residents so up in arms it seems the sort of expected distance that lead dust can carry to any significant extent is in the range of a few hundred metres - it is lead, it is heavy! Not sure there are many people who are living that close to the mine. And I noted from the presentation of the environmental consultant SVL used at the hearing that their modelling of surface level dust exposure in houses in Lue put the level of exposure to less than what said residents would be eating in their food on an annual basis. Yes, it is reasonable to have fears about lead, and acidification, and tailing's damn bursting, but if there are sensible heads on the IPC (and they seem on the surface to be that) then these tiny risks that the company are doing all they can to mitigate will be weighed against the benefits which is what the NSW Government did in coming up with their positive recommendation.
