"Could I dress as I wish, speak freely, be able to follow my own customs etc. "

Sadly, NO, sjj.Dress in a way that they find offensive, and you're in trouble. I've seen girls (Scandinavian) in Java, a moderate part, dressed in cut-offs, bra-less, t-shirts, walking around with the local men spitting on the ground at the sight of them. Why? Because they really dont like to look on prohibited female flesh and it revolts them in the name of their religion. Hey, us guys like to see bra-less nipples through a t-shirt.....a serious Muslim will literally feel sick and angry for being tempted, and hate you for it....they are just that much more devout. Thats all.
See the news recently where a kiss on the cheek in a Dubai restaurant got a couple gaoled?
Even us guys working there....shirts & long trousers, or else.
No shorts outside Bali, in Indonesia.

With me? That is the way they are....most. Some are more liberal & joined us expats in out persuit of the Scandinavians.....lol.
By the same token, they dont throw rocks at you if they see you in a bikini in Australia, do they?

Youjust have to "read the weather" & watch your step.

    cheers
    GZ
