Serbia picked a fight they could not win. Serbia wanted to rule unequally as it was set up in the rotating leadership of the Yugoslav system, the others said no.
Croatia wanted independence, they fought Serbia briefly and got it.
Slovenia wanted their independence too and got it, luckily due to their geography came out essentially unscathed.
Bosnia was a free for all that Serbia thought they were going to come out on top until all sides ended in a draw leaving the dysfunctional state that it is now.
Orthodox Serbs committed a lot of atrocities, they received such treatment in kind.
The Hague example for their leaders would be a good example for Putin too.
Yes, some similar circumstances. Nations wanting their independence and another invading to prevent it.
