the RAN has a history of steering their little diesel-electric boats (think Oberon class) into the middle of nuclear-submarine patrolled USA waters (including pearl) without being detected. Imagine what a nuclear-propelled boat in the hands of an Australian naval command could do to the Chinese. Albeit in proportion to the 5 boats.

there is nothing more satisfying than showing the USN some photos, taken through a periscope targeting system, of a carrier group or pearl harbour entrance. Yes it has happened.

on a Malaysian note… do you think the Australian troops played nice during the Malaya emergency (saving their butts) in the middle of the last century? ….some people have short memories over there

anyway….. the USN knows that we can well and truly use these new boats the way they are intended to be used. It’s just that now we want them enough to pay for them and, more importantly, their need to give them to us outweighs their ironclad history of guarding the technology to the death. In the past it was “take it from our cold dead hands if you can”.
