But how we live and work is dependent on the local area and the city we have to navigate to get to work, to the shops, to childcare/school etc. If you live in a cookie-cutter maze residential development on a city fringe, with one bus to the city and a 30 minute walk to the nearest anything, of course you'll drive everywhere without even thinking about it. Even in the average suburb with mediocre access to public transport most people will opt to drive. That's not a "social standard", that's just the inevitable human behaviour that results from the kind of thoughtless and corrupt urban planning we've been accustomed to for as long as most of us have been alive.

Reducing car use is obviously a good thing for everyone - the car owner is healthier and has more money in their pocket, and everyone is exposed to less noise and air pollution. Less people would be killed and maimed in car accidents. I agree that change should come from better city planning first rather than fining/charging people for road use, but these conspiracy theories around people getting microchipped and getting their cars confiscated and turned into gay Priuses are frankly ludicrous.
