The following is a rough sketch of the kind of prices for a few wafers for testing purposes, not commercial production.
TSMC now charges around 20k for their most advanced 3nm wafer. Each wafer is a batch run of hundreds/thousands of chips. AXE is using multiple sizes for chips, from the most advanced to the larger 130nm and 180nm. So prices will vary from 20 to 10 k depending on which node sizes.
Each wafer has hundreds or thousands of chips again depending on chip size. AXE has shown us a 4mm X 4mm chip....which I roughly estimate to be around 50,000 chips per wafer. Bearing in mind these are all test chips and they won't even need to produce thousands of chips per different node sizes to test. TSMC has a multi project wafer option which makes this testing phase more cost effective. AND AXE has developed a multi-scale wafer fabrication process to take advantage of this very thing!
We can see that AXE has more than enough cash for this phase. Once a customer gets involved, AXE will more than likely not be funding the production entirely but rather licensing and/or selling the IP and related processes. Not forgetting that AXE has devised its own methods of combining the two processes of semiconductor nano fabrication - UV optical lithography and electron beam lithography to fabricate the 150 test QEDs.
