This week we saw General Motors confirm it is dropping Apple #CarPlay and #Android #Auto from its 2024 #EVs. This is the beginning of a trend that will spread right across the auto industry and it isn't about Apple or Google. It is about Qualcomm and the rollout of its third- and fourth-generation #cockpit #applications #processors into cars. Qualcomm is bringing all of its experience of #smartphones and the #Android operating system into the cockpit.CarPlay and Android Auto may be wildly popular, but they provide an "in" to the vehicle which make #automakers nervous. Why would automakers want to share their customer experience with mega-tech companies? Part of Qualcomm's brilliant digital cockpit strategy was to see this threat as an opportunity, and to build a #tech #ecosystem which the automakers will trust. Qualcomm placed itself right at the center of the tech revolution in the automotive cockpit, whilst everyone else was consumed with #selfdriving. The biggest trend coming now in the auto sector is the Immersive User Experience #IUX which combines #eyegaze #gesture and #voice with capacitive and haptic touch inputs. #HD displays will extend from pillar to pillar across the vehicle dash, providing driving information and streaming video. Add #5G connectivity, cloud computing and over-the-air updates, and the interior of the car will never look or feel the same again. An #augmentedreality #HUD will transform the windshield into a human-vehicle interface #HVI that projects route guidance and #safety critical information directly into the driver’s line of sight, ensuring they can drive while keeping their eyes and attention fixed on the road ahead. Eye-gaze and gesture recognition will be provided by face and eye-tracking companies like Seeing Machines. Gaze tracking has morphed beyond simply monitoring the driver for #distraction and #drowsiness. The next frontier is #interiorsensing, and the rear-view mirror has emerged as the key integration point, as shown by Magna International’s occupant monitoring #OMS mirror at #CES. Ahead lies a battle between the giants of the tech industry that will redefine the automotive digital cockpit and the incabin experience. Read more about this trend in The Ojo-Yoshida Report at: https://lnkd.in/dWaZdaGD Right at the heart of the trend is Qualcomm. This is really impressive foresight from Nakul Duggal and Cristiano R. Amon. The 2023 edition of Semicast Research's report "#ADAS & Automotive Vision-based Driver Monitoring Systems" is now published. Availability is limited to about 30 purchasing companies. If you want access to #forecasts, to ask questions about market trends, or to obtain quotes for press releases, you need to be one of the 30. Message me for the study brochure and an order form.
