Higher interest rates means less money is invested because it costs more to borrow money. Also, retail trader will also potentially have less disposable income if they are impacted by their mortgage going up, so they either stop investing or even pull money from their stock investments. Or they could also feel like investing in a terms deposit is a safer bet and be less likely to invest in the stock market
