Firstly I do not get the impression that AP management consider the 'fix' that they have engineered results in a 'less than perfect' device. It sounds more like that in Gen-II MEMS they have provided better manufacturing specs at crucial points so the aberrant behaviours are adjustable and thus preventable. That would include the 'refinements to electromechanical characteristics' of the devices operations such that they are more amenable to pixel by pixel adjustments that accommodate any significant differences in the pixels. Couple this with the software that enables better pixel by pixel control, and the system should enable the pixels to behave more consistently across every pixel in the array. It appears to be the small pixel to pixel differences that affect the superimposing at precise timings of the pulses that creates the differing of the sound wave that is produced, and even that is only at certain frequencies. They don't give exact details, but the idea presented is pretty sensible. The idea is something like if you have some pixels that are fractionally heavier or lighter, springier or duller, they can now tune each one via software to make them all work the same. That is presumably done using a software lookup table for each pixel. Sounds brilliant to me, if in fact that is what they are doing.
