If you look for 1982 Bukit Merah radioactive pollution that should tell you all about the concerns that have been used to justify the political decisions around Lynas and the LAMP.
It being hard to change the public perception of material that is panned as ‘slightly’ radioactive as being safe with that history in mind (albeit the history is very different to Lynas, people don’t look at the details).
The reality is the material is not radioactive at all which is what the Malaysians need to accept to let the LAMP continue C&L operations. I don’t see the Minister accepting that proposition now or in the long term.
I am optimistic however that there will be a compromise. The minister had suggested taking the material out of country. While that’s silly, it evidences that the mindset is set to achieve a compromise (a win/win).
