its a good effort Furps.... I particularly like the rush of the last couple of paras. quite disconnected but jammed in like sardines in a can.

wrt carbon, this initially (around 5 billion years ago) fell into the forming earth from nebulae thousands of light years away. along with a whole lot of other elements. much was C14 isotope. much of the original carbon had been spewed out of volcanoes as the planet started to form a crust and the atmosphere was high in sulphur and carbon so the air was hot. too hot for any living animal yet. but cool enough that the first algae to form. algae plants pumped out oxygen and as the earth cooled animals also started to form using the oxygen and pumping out CO2.

but for the purpose of GW we only need to look back a few hundred million years when the earth started to create carbon as a structure for carboniferous era plants. as these died in large numbers, after all the vegetation was really dense and algae, fungi and bacteria would rot the wood very quickly when the atmospheric temperature was much higher than now.... it was a hothouse with dense clouds of vapour dropping meters of rain.

all these plants died and were covered for millions of years until some bugger learned that the black rocks would burn. so over the last 300 years humans have released millions of years of carbon back into the atmosphere.
