That is a short term investors viewpoint. Right now long term income (grossed up for franking) can often be in the 6%pa to 10%pa range AND with growth of both the capital base and the income stream in many cases. For long term security needs (eg, retirement) a reliable dividend stream is my definite preference - but I do have some spec stocks with the hope of capital gains, they certainly can add spice to life.
