I read the attached article and the links within it. The statement that "ultrasound is extremely dangerous to the health of any unborn child" was not supported by the facts. There was a link to an Australian study that found some possible evidence of growth restriction, however the study also stated that it may be a chance effect. So there appears no conclusive evidence that it is dangerous. However, I would agree that further research appears warranted. It may be like x-rays, ct scans etc (something I unfortunately know a lot about) where small exposure is generally fine but you have to be careful at higher doses.

The suggestion that yuppies just have them for the photos of the foetus was weird. I doubt anyone does that. Ultrasound scans can identify foetal age, but more importantly identify birth defects such as brain and heart abnormalities, down's syndrome, neural tube defects, missing limbs etc and enable potential parents to make an informed decision on whether to abort. We had two ultrasounds for each of our three children and fortunately they were all healthy. Because my wife was in her 30's for all our children, there was a higher than normal risk of downs syndrome.
