Lets re-visit the short data at present:

Sayona Mining (ASX:SYA) - Short Interest - StockTrack

There is about $160M tied up in short positions at present.
Thats based off 800M on short call with ~20c to cover.

If we assess the fact that 0.5% of our shares on issue was held short mid Aug last year. It recently hit 10% held short in early March 2023. 10%!!!
1 tenth of the shares of this stock in short positions!

The share price when the targeted shorting started was about ~30c per share. An we have seen a drift downward in price from ~30c down to about 20c.
800M assume original short option @ 30c - $240M
800M at the revised lower value cover @ 20c - $160M
Obviously not all were sold at 30c and would have been sold on the way down. An not all covers will come at 20c. Hopefully its a short squeeze cover when it comes at 20c+ rather than an even lower short cover with a greater profit.

When we have 800M shares shorted and you see only about 50/100M listed in daily trades, keep in mind that there is more going on behind the scenes than is visible.

It will take macroeconomics to trigger the shorts to cover. Or a pants drop moment if we have a random takeover bid.

I firmly believe if SYA can prove over the next year that we are operational with very little issue we will see a lot more eyes drift our way.
