They are attempting to use it as a battery, pump water from the bottom during the day ( charging) and generate power during the night (discharging).
The problem is if you have ever gone to the snowy centre and looked at the board you will notice that 60% of the system is off, my guess is due to lack of water. The other issue is were do we get the power from to pump what little water we have up in the first place ?
I would really love to know what the round trip efficiency is on a system like this is. my guess under 50% versus a battery at 90 to 92% If it is 50% then for each 2000 Mw coal fired we shut down we need 4000 Mw of wind and solar .. given wind and solar name plate efficiency is under 30% ( sun doesn't shine wind doesn't blow all day) the 4000MW now becomes 12000MW + of name plate capacity.
You can see this gets out of hand very fast and people like Twiggy standing on top of 250MW name plate capacity of wind saying glad to see Lidell close we have the answer here has no idea what he talking about or is out right lying.
