It doesn't make sense if you look at Tesla's positioning of supposedly producing 'premium' EV's compared to the rest of the EV market.
The market will eventually be flooded with EVs so in order to maintain their position, using inferior motors seems a step backwards for passenger vehicles.
As you mention, performance, range, weight, these are critical variables, particularly if you are looking to produce heavier vehicles and trucks in the future as well.
Once EV companies start marketing their vehicles better, i.e. motor, battery (and related components & materials) etc., consumers will become better educated. Inferior motors will not wash with the US market.
