When interest rate is low, there is no point to put money in the bank, therefore you use the money to invest in other things such as stock market. And when fear sets in, they dump stock, and what do they do with the money? They can't put them under the bed, they have to put them somewhere, so they put them in Gold, and USD. Why USD, because "Investors" have to return the money which they borrowed from the bank/broker. They have to buy the USD back, and that's why it goes back up.
Why our AUD drop? Because oversea investors not buying commodity, AUD is a commodity currency, when commodity drops, we drop. Because oversea investor sell copper, sell AUD.
