From a June 2022 AFR piece on Lake Resources. One example of many I've seen where institutional money take cues from social media promotions. Here's another, also on Lake, but which broadly applies to the sector:
Ownership Matters also called out the issue of options to research firms and brokers Red Cloud, Cannacord Genuity, Roth Capital and Lodge Partners, all of which have penned favourable notes about Lake Resources that have been promoted on social media.“There’s an asymmetry between a retail investor and an institutional investor in the small-cap space,” Mr Paatsch said. “No institution would ever place any value in those paid-for brochures - none whatsoever.”
