I've done the sums on an EV with a 70kWh battery, 10kW of solar panels, and a 10kWh house battery to prevent any export to the grid if I nip out in the car (export tariff is a joke in WA). As a retiree who does on average 35km/day I reckon I could go just about off grid in suburbia (if I was allowed to) and pay for the system in around 10 years. I haven't done it because I've no confidence that I or the batteries will last that long, because I'm hopeful of better, safer battery technology, and because I don't know how governments will replace the fuel excise they will be losing (but I know they will, and it won't be fair to everyone).
