According to the UN, Taiwan is part of China and we as a country voted in the UN for that in 1971 and we have not reversed that decision in the interim.
From 1949 to 1996 Taiwan was a military dictatorship and its a "Johny come lately" to the US democratic/free market gig.
IMO its best that you understand Aus history before commenting on what you think or ought to be the status of Taiwan.
If you want Taiwan to be recognised as a country, then ask your MP & Senator to advocate this in Aus parliament thereby sending a petition to the UN to re-establish the ROC (Taiwan) as a country.
The USA is trying to "white ant" the UN decision of 1971 which declared Taiwan as part of China without having the balls to propose the acceptance of Taiwan as a country in a motion to the UN.
