" AGL has begun a $92 million refurbishment of the Unit 1 generator at its 2200-megawatt Loy Yang A power station as part of a maintenance program that aims to produce reliable power until the station’s closure in 2035.

The 560MW Unit 1 generator – one of four generator units at Loy Yang A – will be out of service for more than two months undergoing maintenance works and upgrades.

It will include critical asset integrity assessments, major repairs and replacements.

A final report into a major incident at a central Queensland power station that left hundreds of thousands of homes without power is not expected to be finalised until later this year.

    Key points:

    • A fire at the Callide Power Station's C4 unit a year ago caused a major incident at the time
    • Hundreds of thousands of homes across Queensland and parts of New South Wales were left without power
    • The findings of an investigation into the incident are npt expected until later this year

Operator CS Energy engaged forensic engineer Sean Brady to undertake the independent investigation into the fire and explosion at the Callide Power Station's C4 unit in the weeks after the May 2021 incident.

Queensland’s taxpayers are still in the dark about what happened to the Callide coal-fired power station in May 2021 when a unit exploded and caught fire, disconnecting the state from the rest of Australia’s power grid.

The estimated $200 million replacement of the 420-megawatt C4 turbine has also been further delayed and is not expected to come on line until May, two years after the catastrophic failure of the power station.
