How can the (hopefully) superior traits of digital speakers be recognised via traditional analogue speakers, as occurred at the AGM?

I've seen some commentary from AGM attendees regarding the 'quality of the sound', but surely this is null and void if relayed through traditional analogue speakers? I'm not dismissing any potential digital advances, just keen to hear more on how this could be relevant to digital sound reproduction.
