Developed country. Not quite. The big coastal cities, yes, but the rest of the country is hardly developed at all.
To put it another way. If the amount of money that needed to be spent to bring the rest of the country up to developed status, was actually spent, we would have billions of debt. Comparing Australia as a developed country to others like the US or Japan, is just an exercise in comparing apples and oranges. Its a nonsense.
When I visit the US and see a city the size of Sydney, - like Phoenix, in the middle of hot dry Arizona desert, - I wonder why that development does not happen here.
Australia is not a developed country at all. We may pat ourselves on the back, but the only people we're fooling are ourselves.
