Poyndie...being Greek, my Mum would use "Anathema" quite often...at least 3-4 times a week....to my understanding she used it while watching the news a lot. in the context of "that's evil, that's shameful or in cooking "that can't go together with THAT!"

Similarly and forgive me for saying this, "You Can't marry a Muslim, Cause You are ORTHODOX!" Shame,! Anathema!
