Also Likewise have not heard one logical argument in favour of this tax. Zero. A lot of hysterics perhaps, no logic though.
One totally massive difference with the petroleum tax is that the petroleum one is at least competitive but also it did kill off activity in that sector.
Another is that some minerals are highly profitable whereas some are losers. This tax favours the losers and not those that can survive without help as you suggest.
Why should we support losing business by giving exploration grants and covering losses if by your argument a business should be able to support itself. You say it yourself, I think.
Of course mining requires high capital, it is by nature a huge user of capital as infrastructure is massively expense. Years and years lead time with ZERO income. What little business can build a railway in the Pilbara with spare cash? Cannot compare to your little business in any way shape or form.
