I thought it was very obvious why the West is in Afghanistan. Because that's where most of the iternational terrorists, including 'HIM', resided. We now need to ensure that the fertile ground which enabled Bin Laden and his extreme brand of Muslim mobsters to grow, can be 'snuffed out' forever. It is not a short term project and I believe that was GB's big mistake in not understanding the long term nature of this task.

And once again we hear the same old (untrue) mantra that' Twenty years ago when the Taliban fought the Russians we were allies.' I have seen the same old lie repeated many times on this site probably on the basis that,if you repeat a lie often enough, people will eventaully believe it to be true. It's called the Goebbells (remember him?)technique! Myabe you were the one who first pushed this falsehood.

The West (USA) was NEVER an ally of the Taliban, but it was an ally of the Mujahadeen (Freedom Fighters) some of whom, AFTER the Americans left, may have become part of the Taliban. But don't confuse the two or your motives on this topic may not seem to be totally objective.
