From a risk perspective a margin lending customer with a short position on NXS does not offset the risk of a margin lending customer that is long on NXS. If the price tanks, Comsec may lose on a long customer not being able to meet calls and not being able to cover margin loan by selling the shares. But the short margin lending customer makes a profit - this does not flow to Comsec.
So, shorting does not explain it, IMHO. Happy to be corrected as always.......
