The "Jaws of Life" that you talk about are usually two different tools called "Spreaders" and "Shears".
Sometimes combined and called a "Multi-tool".
Yes they are now increasingly battery operated.
As too our fans we use after a fire to clear the atmosphere as well as portable lights.
