This is why some of the bashers around HotCopper say we are an echo chamber. I am not negative on AKP at all, but what I am pointing out is that absolutist statements saying that we will be the only type of speaker in the future, is not a situation comparable to cathode ray tubes versus flat panels (for instance).
CRTs are heavy, bulky, expensive to manufacture, impractical to operate, require moderately high amounts of power, are highly dangerous to perform maintenance on, are highly susceptible to magnetic interference, suffer from burn-in, are difficult to photograph and film, are fragile, produce x-rays... the list goes on. This constellation of disadvantages made alternative technologies highly compelling despite the high cost and risk.
AKP is in a position where for some applications, they are an amazing improvement which will justify a good price per chip, and the risk inherent in adopting a new technology. But for some other applications, the existing speaker technology works very well and without serious disadvantages - the development cost is already paid and plenty of great products are already being manufactured. My desk has a pair of compact bose speakers which are excellent, as one example.
All I am saying is that we're not taking over the entire market. We are hopefully taking over some very lucrative markets where our product has some incredible advantages, but it is silly to suggest that conventional speakers will no longer be competitive for some purposes.
