Benny I think the key thing if you are going down the DIY route - start small, have some success then move onto bigger projects after you are comfortable you can do it. If you just jump in and start tearing down parts of the house then find you can't complete it or complete it properly then yes that is a recipe for disaster and will probably cost you more in the end.
