The mineral resource of circa 44 million wmt, by JORC code, that is reported annually in September, is all located within the main pit.
A governing factor to the current mine plan is the angle of repose of the back wall (opposite the sea wall). The deepee they go the smaller the footprint of the mine floor. The angle of repose was recently increased from 75 degrees to 80 degrees.
The re-engineered sea wall incorporates a 1.2 metre thick moisture barrier system to prevent seepage. This system was installed to a depth of 50 metres below sea level (seepage does not appear to be a problem below 50 metres below sea level). Peter Kerr has stated that a breach of the re-engineered sea wall will never happen.
The major limiting factor is not to do with distance below sea level, but the angle of repose of the back wall (opposite the sea wall).
The 2 lines of strike of high grade are about 30 metres in width and positioned close to the foot of the back wall, currently being mined to the east and to the west.
The resource was assayed in 2010 as being open at depth (no end to the resource was found).
